Thrifting

Thrift List 2019

thrift-list-2019

Can you believe it’s 2019 already? I decided not to make any “resolutions” this year. I don’t have a “word,” and I’ve already limited the amount I use social media – I haven’t been on Facebook since July of last year! But, one thing that isn’t going to change is thrifting. #amiright

So, I thought I would share my Thrift List with you. What is a thrift list you ask? Well, it’s basically things that I’m actively looking for. Sure, I go thrifting every week and find things I want but they’re not items that I’m really looking for. The items on my thrift list are things that I need/want/have a specific purpose for. I really tried to limit my list to my top 10 but I kept thinking of more things that I truly am looking for (and have been for awhile). So, hopefully, at the very least, this post might give you a little inspiration. We really don’t purchase new things, especially if it’s home décor. I’m willing to wait until we find just the *right* item and I have a few things on my list that I thought I’d share! These are things that we specifically need in our home or something I think is cool that I’d just like to find.

I tried to think of everything that we know for sure we’re need/have been looking for. So, here we go! I scoured Pinterest to find some examples to show you of what I like. Usually, I have a rough idea/image of what I want but the thrift always opens my eyes to styles I didn’t even know I loved. By the way, this list is in no particular order other than how they came to my mind. 🙂

1.Wall Sconce

Inspiration: Warmly

Our bedroom is set up weird. Our bed sits on a wall with windows on one side and wall space on the other. So, we can’t have traditional, matching sconces on either side but I thought it might be cool to have a unique one on just one side. I’m open to any style but I liked this simple sconce from Warmly. I maaaay have something in my stash already but I’m going to hold out and see if I can find something I like better before I commit.

2. TV Stand

Inspiration: Design Sponge

We’re looking for something pretty specific, functionally (needs to hold all of our dvds, etc) and aesthetically (specific height, not too bulky…) but are open to different styles – we just haven’t found the right thing yet. We’re pretty certain it will probably end up being a dresser/buffet situation.

3. Bathroom Vanity

Inspiration: Miss Mustard Seed

I want to redo both of our bathrooms eventually so this isn’t super top priority but if we find the perfect vanities then we’ll get them!

4. Table

Inspiration: Arrows & Bow

We’re always looking for a cool/unique table. Our table was given to us right before we got married and, although it’s a great size and has served us well, we have to keep it covered with a table cloth because it has some heat stains + the varnish has come off in places. We also really hate the chunky legs – it makes it hard for our chairs to fit nicely underneath. So, we love it for everything it has done for us but we always keep an eye open for something we love at the thrift/marketplace/craigslist.

We also eventually want to make a table with vintage legs and our wedding boards (that’s a story for another time). But, until then, we’d love to find a piece that’s both stylish and functional.

5. Bench

We really want a bench for our front porch. We actually found a few in Santa Fe at an estate sale and another one at a local shop but $400+ was not going to happen. It’s not something that we can’t live without right now so we’ll hold out until we find the perfect piece.

6. Coat Rack

Inspiration: Pinterest

We truly do need a good coat rack/bench/hall tree for our Airbnb. We have yet to find the perfect one.

7. Stool

I just want a cute little stool so I can access the top of our closet – nothing special!

8. Copper Pot

Inspiration: Paul Jackson

Who doesn’t have this on their list?

9. Hook Rack

The hook rack…I’m not looking for an accordion rack and not your typical “hooks”… more like pegs without the accordion part? I need some functionally on the back of the bedroom door and one for our Airbnb. I just haven’t found anything that doesn’t remind me of 1970s Mother Goose. Does that make sense to anyone but me?

10. Terra Cotta Pots

Inspiration: Rocky Hedge Farm

I am really on the hunt for terra cotta pots of all sizes. I definitely need several large ones but I’m happy to find smaller pots as well. I have a very specific vision for the garden this year and I need as many of these as I can find. I can’t wait to share what I have planned!

11. Church Pew

Inspiration: Folkways Notebook

I’ve always wanted one of these. But it has to be the *right* one and we haven’t found that one yet. Not to mention, anytime they’re on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, they are priced astronomically.

12. Quilt

In all my years of thrifting (at least 10 years to be exact) I’ve only ever seen one real quilt. I was right behind a woman on an aisle at Goodwill and we must have spotted it at the same time. She was in front of me so she was able to get to it first…I was literally 30 seconds too late. That was probably 3 or 4 years ago and it still bums me out!

13. Bar Stools

The bar stools on the left are the ones I found on Facebook Marketplace a few weeks ago. I love them, they were inexpensive, and they were classic, yet simple. Unfortunately, they sold before I could get to them. So, I’ve been on the hunt ever since.

The bar stools on the right, I literally just found yesterday! These were also found on Facebook Marketplace. They were half the price of the first set and I like them almost as much.

14. Wooden Ladle

I actually found a spoon/ladle similar to this one a few years ago. This is before I bought wooden kitchenware from the thrift – I didn’t know how to sanitize/clean them and I was afraid of germs, really. Anyway, I carried it around in the store but ultimately decided to put it back. Big regret.

15. Mailbox

We currently have an old, red, wooden, carved heart mailbox. I hate it – it looks like old barn wood + pilgrims + hearts had a baby. Yikes.

Believe it or not, mailboxes are actually really hard to find. At least, unique ones are. It doesn’t necessarily have to be vintage or old, I’d just like it to be unique – duh. 😉

16. Light fixture

These are kind of random examples but that’s to say we’re open to anything! We see a lot of the same light fixtures that you find in Home Depot or lights that have the amber colored glass. We aren’t keen on either of those styles so we have yet to bring anything home (although I did find a really cool stained glass ceiling fan once. I bought it and I love it).

17. Vintage Ladder

Inspiration: Driven by Decor

I mean….*heart eyes emoji* Why can’t we do emojis on blog posts yet? But seriously, nothing beats beauty and functionality.

18. Vintage Planter

Inspiration: Daly Digs

Always looking for planters like this for the garden; we’re tight on space with the guesthouse in the backyard.

19. Tree Swing

Inspiration: Pure Deco

My ultimate goal is to make our backyard a magical wonderland. And, in my opinion, that includes a tree swing. This is actually lower on our list because I really don’t expect to find a magical swing at the thrift, but never say never! This may be one of the only items on the list that we actually end up buying new.

20. Vintage Colander

Inspiration: Etsy

I posted on my stories yesterday that I absolutely adore Aubergine from Kitchen Vignettes. She makes short (but very beautiful, labor intensive) videos for PBS Food. She also actually just came out with her own documentary in 2018 about GMOs called MODIFIED. She is so inspiring and her videos always make me so happy. Long story long, she uses a vintage colander like this in her videos and she is nothing short of my cooking muse.

I actually think my parents may have had a colander like this at one point but I could have a false memory…I need to check with my mom to be sure. If that’s true then this would be a double score of a family treasure and checking something off of my list.

There’s nothing better than the feeling of finding a treasure at the thrift.

– Everyone who thrifts –

Ultimately, I could buy any of this new, at a store. But I don’t want to! I love the thrill of the thrift (side note, I had an old blog titled that) and the uniqueness of items you can find thrifting. So, I will always thrift over purchasing new unless I just absolutely need it and can’t find it in a reasonable timeframe. It’s really not even about the money aspect, it’s the feeling of accomplishment when you find exactly what you’re looking for – and sometimes, something even better than you thought.

To me, thrifting is magic.

Happy 2019, friends!
